Ikea made an amazing flatpack garden so citizens with little space can enjoy their own green patch. The Swedish furniture manufacturer has launched Growroom – a 9ft tall DIY sphere for cultivating plants, vegetables and herbs that you can share with your friends and family.

The vertical garden consists of 17 plywood sheets and mind-boggling five hundred screws but it can be assembled with just a hammer and a screwdriver.

However the plywood is not pre-cut so do-it-yourself enthusiasts will have to use CNC machine, table saw or laser cutter.

It was designed to be low cost to construct and assemble in the comfort of your own urban dwelling. Occupying only 2.8 meters by 2.5 meters, it is large enough to sit in it and enjoy some relaxation and rest.

Its designers, Mads-Ulrik Husum and Sine Lindholm, consider the Growroom to be the future when the people will grow healthy food locally.

This is the work of Space10 design project in Denmark, supported by Ikea .

In their recently published blog post, they stated: “The challenge is that traditional farming uses a lot of space but space is a rare resource in the urban environments.”

Growroom has small footprint but it is designed to extended vertically – it’s perfect for people with limited outdoor space.

The creators believe that the people from the cities of tomorrow will want to cultivate their own food despite living in small homes

It has many overlapping sections which means that the plants will get enough light at each level of the vertical garden.

So far, it’s unclear what the cost of the garden will be, but the bargain hunters will keep their fingers crossed to be reasonably priced just like the rest of Ikea’s products.
