– If I stop working who will operate then? – Asks Ala, which despite her years has a very steady hand.

With 89 years and stature of 150 centimeters, this old lady is considered the oldest surgeon who is still working. The Russian surgeon Ala Iljinichna Levushkina operates four days a week sitting in a chair in order to have a better view of the patient.

Ala starts every day at 8 am working in the clinic with patients. Three hours later, she goes to the emergency room. Her assistant helps her climb on a small platform. During her 67-years long career Ala has performed more than 10,000 surgeries. However, she didn’t always want to practice medicine, in fact, she wanted to be a geologist. But after reading some short stories about doctors she began her studies at the Moscow Medical Institute.

According to her, it was fierce competition to be admitted at the institute, but this made her even more decisive. She chose to specialize in Proctology, the field of medicine that deals with the bowel and rectal problems. Thirty years she worked in a mobile medical service which was treating patients living in inaccessible parts of Russia. All proctologists knew Ala, because no one wanted to deal with that part of the body because it is too messy.

– Being a doctor is not just a profession, but also a lifestyle – said Ala Iljinichna Levushkina.

When asked why she did not retire completely, Ala said: – If I stop working who will operate then? Ala will turn 90 on the 5th of May. She describes herself as a racehorse, which in the operating room gets an influx of fresh energy.
